Powerpoint vs. Prezi

I have always used Powerpoint for presentations as a teacher. Just recently I have discovered Prezi, which is a similar presentation tool, but with some key differences. One major difference is that Powerpoint is linear, with slides prepared in a particular order. Prezi, on the other hand, is prepared similar to a concept map or graphic organizer. There is freedom to create the map, and then decide the order you want to present. While presenting, it is easy to change the order it is viewed.

Both Powerpoint and Prezi have interesting slide transitions.Powerpoint allows you to choose how the slides transition. They can change on the click of a mouse or by themselves. Words and titles can show up in many ways as well (such as fly in, fade in, etc.) Prezi spins and zooms in on the different sections, and although the motion of it can make me feel a little bit dizzy, it really makes the information appear to be three dimensional and similar to a satellite view.

Overall, I think both Powerpoint and Prezi are similar in what they accomplish. They both present information in creative ways, but Prezi seems more interactive and exciting. If I have to choose between the two styles, I choose Prezi.

  1. I found the Prezi tutorial to be very informative; however, since I consider myself to be a novice where technology is concerned, Prezi seemed a bit intimidating. As long as it resembled Power Point, I was okay. When it came to clicking on the object or text and then on the inner and outer circles, I started to get a little light headed. Like you, though, I think that Prezi offers alot more creative options, and this is sure to please those who are free spirited, not wanting to be locked in to any one mode of presenting their information. Here's hoping Prezi turns out to be a great match for your course project.

  2. I was also a little overwhelmed with the style of Prezi. However, there are many times having the work space like Prezi does can be more appropriate for a visual. It is very interesting to work with and seems like it would grab the attention of students well.

  3. I agree and think that Prezi creates an exciting presentation. I am unsuare of how to utilize it. I did sign up for a class through our technology center to learn how to use it. Unfortunately, the class is in March.

  4. I like how I can get creative with Prezi (http://prezi.com/bawkiey9hp0a/manatees-the-gentle-giants/) but it won't accept some of my images. It has a lot of potential, but I've found that I have to be patient with myself when I'm learning how to use it. Will you be using Prezi for your presentation for class then?

  6. I was very interested in using Prezi after watching the tutorial. However, I did have some trouble using it. I beleive it was just user error more than anything. I am going to play around with it more and try to use it in my classroom.
